Rope Rescue Awareness Operations (RRAO)

The California State Fire Marshal Rope Rescue Awareness and Operations course is a comprehensive training program designed to equip first responders with the essential skills needed for safe and effective rope rescue operations. Focused on foundational knowledge, the course covers both awareness and operational levels, ensuring participants understand the hazards, techniques, and procedures involved in rescuing victims from high-angle environments.

At the Awareness level, students are introduced to basic rope rescue concepts, including hazard identification, scene safety, and the roles and responsibilities of team members. This level emphasizes understanding the equipment and tools used in rope rescue, such as ropes, harnesses, and mechanical advantage systems, without direct hands-on involvement in rescues.

The Operations level builds on the awareness foundation by offering hands-on training in practical rope rescue techniques. Participants learn how to rig systems, manage tension, and assist in actual rescues under supervised conditions. They will also be taught how to establish anchor points, perform patient packaging, and work as part of a rescue team in both urban and wilderness settings.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be better prepared to safely contribute to rope rescue missions and support more advanced rescue teams during emergency situations.
